Lorenzen 2nd, Team 5th - both records - at South Heptathlon!

It took seven events over two days, but it was well worth the wait at the MSTCA South Heptathlon at Notre Dame in Hingham. Kylie Lorenzen had an epic comeback to take 2nd place overall in a new school record, beating the defending champion, while the team scored over 10,000 points, shattering the school record thanks to the depth of our freshmen phenoms, Sydney Snow and Madison Ward!

After Day 1, which had hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200, Kylie was in third place, over 100 points behind 2nd place. She had a very good first day, with the best jump of the competition (5'1.75), 2nd best 200 (25.99, missing her own school record by 0.01), and running a 17.09 in the hurdles that would normally qualify for states!

After the javelin, Kylie was 200 points behind Weymouth's Jen Kimball, who was the defending champion and also is running track at Holy Cross next year. But Kylie stepped up with a big 16'11.25 mark in the long jump, pulling herself within 40 points entering the last event...the 800.

Knowing she needed to beat Kimball by at least 3 seconds, Kylie tucked in behind Kimball, and with 300m to go, made her move. She ran the last 200 in 35, and her time of 2:27 easily made up the difference, earning her 2nd place with 4123 points, the 12th best score in the entire state since 2001!

Our freshman stars, Sydney Snow and Madison Ward, also climbed the leaderboard on Day 2. Out of 87 total competitors, seemingly 50 of which were league all-stars in some events, they were 33rd (Syd) and 42nd (Madison) after Day 2. But solid performances at long jump (14'6.5 Syd, 14'10.5 Madison) kept them in the running. Syd was still 33rd entering the 800. But after winning her heat by 12 seconds in 2:27 - causing several spectators to wonder "Who is THAT?" she moved all the way up to 24th place with 3097 points!

Madison ran a 2:39, tying her PR, to finish in 38th. As a team we were 5th overall with 10038, a score that normally places you in the top 3. This was the deepest team field they've ever had.

Highlights of the meet...remember, 87 competitors.
Kylie: tied 1st HJ (5'1.75), 2nd best 200 (25.99), 5th best 800 (2:27), 2nd best long jump (16'11.25),
Syd: 5th best 800 (2:27), tied 13th best high jump (4'8, tying her PR!)
Madison: tied 5th best high jump (4'10)

The old school record was held by former New England HJ champ Shawna Rossini, at 3552 points.

FIFTY SEVEN POINT THREE EIGHT!!!

Unknown Blog Rule #1: Anytime a SPRINTER lowers their own school record by over a full second, I have to type the result in all caps in the post heading.

On to the details...
So entering today's All-State Championship Meet at Westfield State University, Kylie Lorenzen was seeded 7th in the 400 at 58.54, last week's time. Despite temperatures that peaked at 95 degrees - it was most likely still over 90 when she ran around 5:30 PM, and being in lane 1 of the fast heat, Kylie was on a mission.

At 150m in, she was tied for fifth, a decent amount behind the leaders. But she started moving up, made up a ton of ground on the final turn, and actually pulled into a tie for the lead with 70m to go. Although three girls did pull a bit ahead, consider that the girls that beat her included two All-New England 600m runners from indoors (Sierra Irvin of Hingham and All-American Amy Piccolo of Ursuline), as well as the fastest girl in Central Mass.

As good as she was last year, Kylie's 57.38 is nearly three full seconds faster than her freshman time of 60.3. In the past 15 years, only two Holliston athletes have placed higher than fourth at All-States; Emmaline Berg (shot put, 2009 - went on to be 2nd place at the Ivy League championship this year), and Shawna Rossini (2003 New England champ in HJ, All-Ivy at Cornell).

Rare company indeed.

Heptathlon Monday/Tuesday for Lorenzen as well as Madison and Sydney.

Girls Take 2nd At TVL Meet, Lorenzen breaks school record!

For the second straight year, the girls team finished 2nd at the TVL Championship, avenging regular season defeats to Dover-Sherborn and Westwood. Leading the way was Kylie Lorenzen, who scored 28 points, beating three teams by herself, and breaking the school record in the long jump along the way!

Reilly Conroy started the day for us in the 400 hurdles, taking 11th overall in a time of 81.87, and ranking as the second fastest freshman in the race! Up next was Eve Bagley, who entered as the sixth overall seed but lowered her PR by two seconds to finish third in 71.73, nearly qualifying for states and scoring six huge points for us!

In the mile, Kiara Hanlon (5:59.90) and Abby Meltzer (6:11.85) were 18th and 19th overall, running in the unseeded heat. In the seeded heat, Katie Salley entered as the 10th seed, but worked her way through the pack and stormed through the final straightaway to claim 5th in 5:37.83!

In the 100, Lily Stering finished 11th with a time of 15.05.

At this time, the first field events started to finish up. Kylie Lorenzen entered the finals of the long jump with a commanding lead, having cleared 16'11, over a foot ahead of the #2 jumper. She had a PR of 17'3, which was a mere half-inch off of the school record of 17'3.5, set by Chrissy Sereno in 2003. On her last jump of the finals, Kylie leaped 17'4, into the record books. She now has the school record in the 100, 200, 400, and long jump. Madison Ward (15'4.75) and Morgann McKunes (15'3) finished fourth and fifth, giving us 16 points from one event!

Over at high jump, Kylie and Phoebe Fitzgibbon of Westwood each cleared 4'10, 5'0, and 5'2 on their first attempt. After both nearly cleared 5'4, they had a "jumpoff", where they lowered the bar back down to 5'3. Kylie took 2nd after Fitzgibbon cleared 5'3 on her second attempt, but the two stand as the co-favorites for the state meet.

Over at the girls discus, Rachel Kriegsman (59'9) and Amber Ahronian (61'1) overcame the lack of grip from all the rain to finish 13th and 14th, respectively.

Back on the track, Kylie had a rematch with Carly Muscaro of Ashland in the 400. Last year, in the second meet of the year, Muscaro had defeated Kylie in the 400, one of only two losses on the track in the league she had all season. Muscaro had a slight lead on the final turn, but Kylie caught her on the straightaway and absolutely blasted the last 100m, finishing in 59.63, over a second ahead of her rival - a girl who was 8th at All-States last year, by the way. Right behind Muscaro for most of the race was a Hopkinton girl, but our own Sydney Snow made up a staggering amount of room in the last 100m to finish third in 62.99, giving us 16 points in the event. Madison Ward finished 8th overall in 65.48, taking second in the second heat.

In the 800, Maggie Naughton finished 16th in 2:40.25, besting several competitors in her heat. Next up was the 100 hurdles, where Diana Waterman (20.11) and Bridget Ghelli (20.25) each beat half the field to take 11th and 12th in conditions that were quickly deteriorating for everyone, particularly people in the sprints dealing with the headwind.

In the 200, Nikki Kerrigan took fourth overall in 27.70, after nearly qualifying in (slightly better) conditions in the prelims in 27.39 when the temperature was still hospitable!

In the second set of field events, Madison Ward took 2nd in the triple jump at 33'2.5, while Sydney Snow claimed fourth at 31'0, giving us 12 points, all from freshmen!

In the javelin, Rachel threw 67'3 and Amber 66'5, as the last event before the 4x400 finished up.

In the relay, Virginia got us off to a strong first leg, splitting 65 and change as we were in the lead pack. Eve Bagley followed up with a 67, then handed off to Sydney, who split a 64 and pulled us back into third place. Anchoring was Nikki Kerrigan, who ran down Hopkinton's girl from a considerable deficit to take second place behind Bellingham - who stacked the event - in 4:21!

On the boys side, we started off with Cole Osten in the 400 hurdles, as he finished second in his heat to claim 12th overall in a big PR of 65.67 despite the driving rain. Ryan Leonard followed that up by earning fourth overall in 59.47!

In the mile, Tanner Datz PR'd with a 4:55.30, 12th overall, then Jack Boyd also PR'd in a 4:42.83, taking 10th!

After finishing sixth in the trials, Logan Cotto roared back in the finals of the 110 hurdles, finishing third in 16.89.

For the early boys field events, Cotto also finished fifth in the triple jump (39'8.5), while Mike Donovan was 12th (35'6). In javelin, Reuben Jacobson threw 79'10, bettering his seed position, and Matt Wolfson was 13th at 101'8. Over at shot put, Matt threw 33'0 while Jake PR'd at 29'5.

Back on the track, in the 100, Ed Bennie and Troy Waddell finished 14th and 15th in 12.61 and 12.65, respectively. Ben Clapper was 13th and Isaac Fadden 14th in 25.36 and 25.42. The 4x100 team of Fadden, Clapper, Donovan, and Losanno was eighth in 49.33.

Ethan Harris was seeded sixth in the 800, but a late charge vaulted him up to fourth overall in 2:07.34, as places 3-6 were separated by 0.7 seconds!

Ryan Snow was similarly seeded sixth, last man in the fast heat. His trademark move down the final 100m paid off, as he took fourth in 53.60, qualifying for states! He also cleared 5'4 in high jump, just missing the medals.

The Glazebrook duo shined in the two mile as well, seeded 8th and 9th but finishing 4th and 7th in 10:28 and 10:59, respectively.

In the other late field events, Ryan threw 80'3 and Jake 73'2 in the discus, while in the long jump, Logan was ninth at 17'9.75 and Mike 16th at 15'4.25.

Finally, despite being put in the unseeded heat for the 4x400, the boys knocked off some of the fast heat participants, as they finished sixth in 3:46.64!

Lorenzen MVP, 8 Team Medals at Fr/Soph Meet!

You know you've had a great day at a track meet when the biggest problem is waiting for all your medals to be distributed!

Although the meet is not scored, if you use a 10-8-6-4-2-1 (1st through 6th) state type scoring system for it, I think our girls would have finished second...

1) Pembroke 70
2) HOLLISTON 51
3) Bromfield 42
4) Hopkinton 40
5) Bishop Feehan 37
Last year, Kylie Lorenzen nearly won the meet MVP, as she won the long jump and high jump, but took 2nd in the 200 to Amy Piccolo of Ursuline. Piccolo wound up winning the meet MVP, with Kylie taking the Outstanding Field Performer award.

This year, it was MVP or bust, and by the end of the day, it became a question of how many records she would set.

She started in the 400, where she absolutely demolished the field in 58.83 seconds, the only girl under 60 seconds, and came within 0.26 seconds of breaking an 8-year old meet record by Meg Looney of Bishop Feehan, who was a New England champion in the 600 (1:34). It also lowers her own school record by a full 1.5 seconds, and makes her the first Holliston girl under 60 seconds!

Next, Kylie jumped 16'11.5 in the trials of the long jump, breaking the meet record set by Medfield's Alex Stanton by two inches, and giving her enough of a lead (11 inches) heading into the finals that she saved her legs for the high jump, which was still ongoing.

In high jump, her toughest competition may have been the teammate sitting next to her, as Madison Ward tied for 2nd at 4'11, which would not be her only medal of the day. After Kylie cleared 5'1 on her first attempt, she decided to go for 5'4 to set a new meet record. (She had tied the meet record of 5'3 in her win at this meet last year). She had two great attempts, and although she came up short, she left as a rare Triple Winner.

Like Kylie, Madison had to shuffle back and forth between jumps. While she was making her way up to 2nd in high jump, she cleared 33'10 in the trials of the triple jump for 2nd place entering the finals, where she popped a 34'2 to tie her PR and finish in second place, keeping her streak alive of medaling at every invitational she's been in this year - cross-country and indoor track included!

Nearly joining her in the triple jump finals was Sydney Snow, who jumped 31'3 to take 10th, a great mark after being exhausted from a spectacular 2:28.15 PR in the 800, which earned her third place.

Katie Salley finished in the top 10 for the 800 in 2:35.42 (9th), and the Dynamic Duo of Mike and Ed Glazebrook took 2nd and 6th in the boys 2-mile, finishing in 10:31.56 (Mike) and 10:41.97 (Ed). Eve Bagley took eighth in the girls hurdles in 73.28 seconds, also a PR (after electronic time conversion)

Several other athletes also bettered their seed time or place. Madison Savas ran 14.24 in the 100 (missing the top 25 by one place), which is worth a 14.0 on our track (handtimed), a big PR. Lily Stering's 14.67 compares quite favorably with her PR, while Ed Bennie ran 12.62 to take 23rd in the boys 100. He also ran 25.68 in the 200 (22nd, two top-25 finishes!), with Stefano Demetriades coming in 27.40
Matt Wolfson took 17th in the shot put at 32'8.75, and also threw the javelin 106 feet, while Mike Donovan came in 10th for the triple jump at 35'0, the third best mark by a freshman! Bridget Ghelli ran 20.64 in the 100 hurdles, just missing her (converted) PR by a few tenths.

Monday is an away meet back over at Westwood, please be ready for the bus at 2:30!

Fr/Soph Schedule (Approximate)

Here is an estimated schedule of the events we are competing in tomorrow.

***Reminder that the bus LEAVES at 8 AM, so be at the HS by 7:45. The meet is at Westwood High School.

9:30 - Field Events - Girls first for Triple Jump, Disc, Jav, Boys first for High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put
***For each field event (except High Jump), they take the top 7 athletes and have them take three more attempts in the finals. Your best jump/throw carries over from the trials.
FIRST FIELD
Girls Triple Jump (Flight 5 of 5 - Snow, Ward)...there's 66 jumpers, about 50 go before you, so you're at the end.
Boys Shot Put (Flight 2 - Wolfson) - only 7 guys in the flight ahead of you, so I'd stay at the shot put area during that flight.

SECOND FIELD
Boys Triple Jump (Flight 2 of 2 - Donovan)....long time for those 66 girls to finish, and there's a flight ahead of you. Probably the latest start of the 2nd field events
Girls High Jump (Ward, Lorenzen) - there's only 8 boys jumping, so they'll be done quickly. I bet they start by 10:15. Get your marks with everyone else, even if you are passing the first height (4'3), since they won't let you get them later.
Boys Javelin (Flight 3 of 3 - Wolfson) - 39 girls and two boys flights before you, so you've got quite a while as well.
Girls Long Jump (Flight 2 of 2 - Lorenzen) - Last flight, boys go first, also have a while.

RUNNING (Girls first in each event, start time I list is thus for the girls race. Races 400m and higher are seeded based on time, slowest to fastest)
10:00 to 10:20 - 400 Hurdles (Bagley)
10:20 to 10:40 - 200 Trials (Demetriades, Bennie)
10:40 to 11:10 - 2 Mile (Mike Glazebrook, Ed Glazebrook) 22 in each gender, with a couple scratches - always happens - I bet they just do one heat of each.
11:10 to 11:35 - 800 (Snow, Salley)
11:35 to 11:50 - 400 (Lorenzen)
11:50 to 12:10 - 100 Trials (Savas, Stering, Bennie)
Mile, finals of the 100/200, and the relays all follow afterward.

The boys lost 75-61, and the girls lost 75-61 as well, but we had several impressive performances. Mike Glazebrook also made states, running 10:23.1 to sneak under the 10:24.0 standard for the 2 mile. And Kylie Lorenzen broke yet another school record, although this time it was one she already owned, as she won the 400 in 60.3, lowering her PR from last year by 0.3 seconds!

Girls Beat Medfield on Relay!

An absolutely thrilling end to an exciting day, as the girls meet came down to the 4x400 meter relay, and Sydney Snow's surge with 50 meters to go gave Holliston the win!

***Missing a few field event marks, although I think I have all the names of the point scorers.

Freshmen started the day as well, as Eve Bagley (74.0) and Reilly Conroy (80.1) took 1st and 3rd in the 400 hurdles. Up next was the 100 meters, and Nikki Kerrigan ran her 2nd fastest time of the year, 13.2, to take 2nd place behind perennial favorite Kristina Gustafson of Medfield.

In the mile, Katie Salley set a fast early pace en route to a win in 5:41.9, nearly setting a PR. But three more big points also came from Madison Ward, who was in 4th by a full 10 yards with 150 to go, and kicked down the backstretch to move all the way up to 2nd in 5:45.9!

Meanwhile, over at the long jump Kylie Lorenzen won with a jump of16'2, while Morgann McKunes took third at 14'2, beating two girls who had done mid-15 feet this year!

Up next was the 4x100 relay, and Morgann, Lily Stering, Virginia Hanstad (12.4 split!), and Nikki Kerrigan won in 54.25 seconds, holding off Medfield for five crucial points.

In the open 400, Shauna Rockett made her return with a 63.9, pulling away with 120 meters to go and never looking back, and qualifying for states in the process!

In the 100 hurdles, Diana Waterman took second in 19.3, securing three more points.

Kylie and Madison were up against a 4'11 and a 4'8 in high jump, and Kylie cleared every height on her first attempt, finishing at 5'2 before stopping in order to prepare for the 200. Madison, who came back after her mile to jump at 4'6, made 4'8 and 4'10 on her first attempt, tying the 4'11 girl from Medfield for 2nd place, giving us 7 of the 9 points for the event.

Up in the 800, Sydney Snow ran 2:33.9, taking second behind Taylor Worthy (she of the 2:19 PR). It would not be the last time the two would meet...Kiara Hanlon took third in 2:43.4

Amber Ahronian meanwhile had taken third in javelin, and was not done yet adding to our point total as Medfield began to claw its way back.

In the 200, Gustafson faced off against Kylie, and Kylie reminded everyone why she was 7th in the entire state last year in the event, blasting a League Leading 26.3 to win going away.

Meanwhile, having just made states in the mile and cleared 4'10 in high jump, Madison Ward unleashed not one, but TWO jumps of 34'2 at the triple jump, setting a new PR by one foot and moving within 19 inches of the school record, and into second place in the TVL list.

The 2 mile saw Chelsea Dubin win easily in 13:29, but Jess Strzempko pulled away from Medfield's second runner around the mile mark to take a pivotal third place in 14:29.

As the 2 mile was underway, quick count of the score left us needing points from the discus in order for the 4x400 to even matter. Finally, word came back as the girls returned from the throwing area, which was way over on the other side of the school. Rachel Kriegsman and Amber Ahronian had picked up 4 massive points to put Holliston in a position to win the meet on the relay.

Eve Bagley started us out with a 64.7, a PR of over 1 second, to give us an early lead. Katie Salley (68.1) and Kiara Hanlon (68.2) pushed the lead to four seconds before Sydney Snow took the baton as the anchor up against Worthy, the TVL MVP from indoor track. Worthy made her move on the backstretch, and actually passed Snow with 100 meters to go. But with 70 meters left, Sydney willed herself back into the lead, not to be denied as she crossed the tape in 4:24.6, winning by 0.6 seconds!

Final score, if I have it correct, was 72-64 Holliston. I'm missing a few field event marks - most notably throws, I'll add those when I get them.

The boys lost 86-50, but there were several key winners and impressive performances.

In the 400 hurdles, Ryan Leonard won in yet another PR of 58.9 seconds.
Ed Bennie came out of nowhere to run 12.2 and take second in the 100.
In the mile, Tanner Datz kept alive his Sub-5 streak, running 4:59.4. for third place.
The boys narrowly lost the 4x100 but PR'd in 49.4 (Fadden, Clapper, Donovan, Losanno)
Ryan took second in the 400 in 55.1, a season best.
Logan won the 110 hurdles in a season best 16.9 seconds.
In the 800, up against Sean Robertson (a 4:40 miler), Ryan Moser and Jack Boyd both beat the talented Warrior, running 2:03.7 and 2:05.2.
Isaac Fadden and Ryan Snow took 2-3 in the 200, running 25.1 and 25.7.
The Glazebrooks went 1-2 in the two mile, with Mike winning in 10:55 and Ed second in 11:01.
The boys also won the 4x400 in 3:50, with Ryan Leonard (55.1), Ryan Moser (61), Jack Boyd (56.3) and Cole Osten (57.5).
Ryan Snow also won the high jump at 5'4, and Mike Donovan PR'd by over a foot to take third in the triple jump at 36'6.

Four Qualifiers, Two Medals, Everyone Gets Top 10!

First, my humbles of apologies to this site's loyal readers, who have now viewed the blog over 20,000 times as of Tuesday. In light of forgetting to post the Hopkinton meet results, please accept this ridiculously lengthy, over-the-top recap of today's Div. 3 State Relays meet.

Enjoy.

Up first was the Girls 4x100. While going in, we certainly knew they had more than enough talent to break 54 seconds, Fate always lingered with the inevitable fear of All It Takes. As in, All It Takes is one bad handoff and the team could be DQ'd, and miss entirely, or lose enough time that 54 seconds became a formidable barrier, rather than a mere hurdle.

Morgann McKunes led off, having only recently returned to racing, and a strong first leg (13-high, from a non-running start) and solid handoff to Nicole Kerrigan gave Holliston good position. Nikki flew down the back straightaway, and found Virginia Hanstad waiting on the turn. Another clean handoff kept the girls in a very large pack of 2nd-6th place behind the leader. Virginia tore around the turn, and Fate quickly posed her with the problem of the Early Missed Pass. Having just barely missed on the first attempt, Virginia instantly forced the baton forward into Kylie's hands, an absolutely savvy veteran move from someone who's still relatively new to the 4x1. It's harder than it sounds, especially considering how fast the person she's handing off to is.

Speaking of which, for the second straight year, Kylie Lorenzen absolutely stormed down the final straightaway. It was a virtual tie for 2nd-6th, but up against anchor legs from other teams that probably have run under 13 seconds, Kylie pulled away by over 10 meters, splitting what was believed to be anywhere from 11.6 to 12.2 seconds for the final leg.

For a relay to qualify for states requires quality depth. But for the same relay to qualify without the use of not just any leg, but its normal anchor? That requires extraordinary depth, as well as the ability of those assigned to the task to step up and accept the challenge.

With Sydney Snow a last-minute switch into the 4x400, whose glory was soon to come in its own right, the quartet of Katie Salley, Maggie Naughton, Chelsea Dubin, and Madison Ward were left to attempt a sub-10:48 and possible top-10 finish without their usual 2:29 ace.

Fate can also play tricks on the mind, and tried one when Katie lined up, realizing that there were only nine teams in the heat, but more to the point, she was in a barrel that had more runners (5) than the inside start (4). Potential last-minute distractions were disregarded like a common housefly, as once the gun was fired, she took off and quickly grabbed the lead. Her first 400 made short work of two-thirds of the field, as a lead pack of three was soon established. She made the first baton pass at 2:36, in seconds place, to Maggie Naughton.

Fate decided to go after Maggie Naughton weeks before the race, as she was one of many juniors posed with the question: Scavenger Hunt or Relays? While the rest of her class was driving about town picking up various items, one thing Maggie got that they most certainly did not was a sub-2:40 800, also known as a PR to our Devoted Trackie. She maintained our spot in the top-three pack, which had separated considerably from the chasers, and handed off to Chelsea Dubin.

Chelsea Dubin was presented with another one of Fate's cruel ironies. The "PR or Team?" Dilemma. Starting out running stride for stride in 2nd/3rd place just behind the leader, Chelsea's opponent shot out the first 200 at an absolutely blistering pace. While under normal circumstances, she probably wouldn't go out quite that fast the first 200 if she were running for time, Chelsea clearly realized that the alternative would've meant letting herself get "gapped" and potentially losing critical places. She gamely shadowed her Eager Beaver foe, and came through in 2:43, within striking distance for anchor Madison Ward to finish off the task.

Madison had run exactly one 800 in her entire life prior to today, and with "Sub 10:40" still looming as merely a Possibility, and not a Lock, her work was cut out for her. She made up part of the gap early, and with her trademark long-strided kick, finished in 2:38.6, also a PR, as the team took eighth in 10:37, easily qualifying for states.

Fate has lost to Kylie Lorenzen before. Freshmen weren't supposed to be named League MVP's, or break three school records, but that didn't stop her last year. With her versatile skill set, Fate's only option of late has been the Overlap. Meaning, she'll wind up doing one event at the same time another one is about to occur.

And of course, in a meet that took 7 hours, our long jump relays' flight would not only be checked in, but actually jumping during the exact heat that our 4x400 relay was running.

Sydney Snow started the 4x400 with a vengeance, running 63.7 in her first race in two weeks. Handing off to fellow Freshman Phenom Eve Bagley, the hurdler extraordinaire clocked a 68 before handing off to Nikki Kerrigan. Having already run the 4x100, and still a bit under the weather, Nikki nevertheless ran a 66 before handing off to Kylie, having maintained the lead. Much like the 4x100, this anchor was plummeting to depths in the ocean that other boats simply could not reach. Kylie torched a 60.3, gapping the gasping chase pack by over 30 meters, as the girls not only won their heat, but displaced all but three teams in the seeded section, taking fourth in 4:18.

While all this was going on, Morgann McKunes and Madison Ward had started the Long Jump Relay. Fate was the most upfront with its attack on these two, using an ally known as Ten Mile An Hour Headwind to attempt to dissuade our young jumpers. Undaunted, the two broke 14' on their first attempt, then each went 14'high (I had 14'8,14'7) despite jumping into the constant wind. After their second attempts, Kylie jogged over, having finished the 4x400 literally three minutes earlier. After one run-through to check her mark, she popped 15'1 on her first attempt, then soared into the sky on her second one with a 16'4. As they were the second flight of five, it wasn't until the end of the meet, when the boys 4x400 was running, that we learned they had also taken fourth place.

Just before this, a caravan of talented junior boys had made their way down Route 495, and arrived at Pembroke with visions of States looming before them. The Boys 4x800 team was in the fast heat, up against schools like Hingham (Indoor All-Americans), Pembroke (15 sub 5-minute milers), Bishop Feehan, etc. Ryan Leonard led off with a 2:12, keeping the team in range as the top three superteams pulled away. Ethan Harris, who wasn't even on the team until two days ago when he popped a 2:08.9 at Hopkinton and announced to the league that he was Someone To Reckon With now, nearly PR'd with a 2:09.5, weaving his way in a pack that was still congested at that point. Jack Boyd took the baton, and having run just one 800 ever prior to today, hung close and split 2:09 before passing the stick to anchor Ryan Moser. Sub-8:40 was looming, much like the girls sub-10:40, as more of an obstacle than originally thought, with the heat rising and Pembroke High's sun-scorched track absorbing the rays. Moser gained ground on the other anchors, and came through the final tape in 2:05, as the boys placed eighth in 8:37, qualifying for states.

The 4x400 team had found Fate dealing them two of its previously used weapons. The Unavailable Usual Runner (indoor mainstay Logan Cotto, gearing up for Monday), as well as the Double (Jack Boyd, gamely volunteering to run just 40 minutes after his 800). Undeterred, Liam Doyle led off with a 55-high, before passing off to Jack, who gritted and beared down and came out with a 55-mid split. Cole Osten took over, and despite being in a bit of No Man's Land, pulled through a 56-high before handing off to Ryan Snow. Ryan wasn't just in a bit of No Man's Land, he was in the center of it, but still pushed through for a quality time, running 56-mid as the boys ran 3:43, just missing states.

Athletes often dream about Destiny. They envision the perfect race, with perfect conditions, opponents who go out at paces conducive to their own goals, and perfect feelings, mentally and physically, before the race starts. In reality, none of this ever occurs. Anchors get switched, winds go against you, jumps occur right after a race, state relay attempts happen when you've already raced hard earlier in the day, and opponents do unusual things that you are forced to respond to.

But that's the thing about Fate. Instead of the day you feel your best, or when your opponent is weakened, or the winds are in your favor, sometimes its the day you feel like garbage when you wake up, or a day when you've had to double back (Jack had the fastest 4x4 split, for instance), when you wind up running your best.

Because in reality, none of the things you envision when you dream about perfect races, or perfect jumps, are within your control. You can't control the weather, your opponents, your body's temporary illnesses, or the time that Fate turns to you and says, "Today is the day."

The one thing all of these athletes had control over was their choices prior to the meet. The juniors, as Maggie pointed out, chose to be with their teammates rather than go on the Scavenger Hunt. Morgann and Madison chose not to be bothered by headwinds, Sydney chose not to be apprehensive about her first race in a while, Jack chose not to let his 800 affect his 400, Kylie chose not to let her 400 affect her long jump.

Destiny is Your Choice.

Ward/Alumni/Banquet News

Well, of the 35 girls that qualified in the high jump for the 2013 All-State Championship, nearly half didn't bother to make the trip. Undaunted, our freshman Madison Ward charged ahead, and after coming ridiculously close to clearing opening height (which is 5'0 for this meet), she missed on her final attempt. She finishes her season tied for 2nd-best among freshmen in the entire state with a PR of 5'0, which she got when she medaled at last week's Division 3 Championship and the TVL Championship. Great job Madison, especially considering that she didn't even start jumping until late December!

A reminder that the banquet is Tuesday night, one of the earlier posts details what you need to bring. Also, if you haven't turned in your uniform, please do so ASAP. Best time is after school in Coach Moreau's office.

Finally, some great alumni news, if Dartmouth wins its first ever Heps (Ivy League Championship) title, they're going to have to thank Emmaline Berg after what she did today. Check out the alumni website (hollistontrackalumni.blogspot.com) for the details!

Wild Cards - Ward In, Snow out

Unfortunately, the Div. 2 meet had enough kids beat Syd's time that she missed a wild card for All-States.

Although I'm sure our 600m sensation is disappointed, I think it's important to note just how rare it is for a freshman to even contend for an All-State berth. Only 14 freshmen will be competing at All-States next week (in any individual event), and that includes every town in the entire state. Big schools, small schools, Eastern Mass, Central Mass, Western, etc.

Sydney's 1:40.67 finishes as the #2 freshmen time in the state, and #26 overall among all runners.

So, all good things must come to an end, and it was certainly a heck of a season for our other freshman phenom.

Don't forget about the banquet on Tuesday the 26th, and we all wish the best of luck to Madison on Saturday.

Wild Card Update - Ward a lock, Snow still in the hunt!

Here's the latest on the Wild Card Chase. Remember, the top 12 finishers (not counting the kids that finished top 3 in their division) advance as wild cards to the All-State Meet. If there's a tie - like in high jump - they take all the kids that are tied.

High Jump - Madison Ward is in. Only one wild card has cleared 5'2, so 5'0 looks to be a lock to be the Wild Card Height. Great job Madison!

600 - Right now, Sydney has the 8th best wild card time, behind four kids from Div. 1 and three from Div. 4. Only Division 2 is left.

The simplest way to put it is we're watching the 8th place finish from Division 2, since that would be the fifth "wild card" spot. If Sydney's time beats the 8th place Div. 2 kid, she's going to All-States. Based on seeds and how the other Divisions performed relative to expectations, it looks possible.

Banquet Info/All-State Update

Important banquet info is listed below. Here's the update on the wild card situation, with the Division 4 meet having just finished. Remember, there are 12 wild cards - although if there's a tie (which is often the case in high jump), they take everyone tied with the same height.

Snow - now the 4th fastest wild card time, 3 Div. 4 kids displaced her. Div. 4 was seeded stronger than Div. 2, so she's still got a chance at making All-States.
Ward - even 2nd place at Div. 4 was 5'0, so only one wild card has gone above 5'2. Looking very strong for an All-State berth!

BANQUET INFO

As is the tradition for the track teams, we will be having a potluck for the end of the year banquet and the assignments are based on grade.

Seniors - please bring either two 2-liter bottles of soda or a case of water
Juniors - please bring a main dish of your choice that will feed a large family (approx 6-7 people)
Sophomores - please bring a salad
Freshmen - please bring a dessert

Out of consideration for those in attendance with food allergies we ask that all food be Nut and Peanut FREE. For those of you with other dietary restrictions, we ask that you bring something that is appropriate for you/your child to eat.

Disposable pans and dishes are preferred. Please clearly label any containers you want returned to you. Please understand that we will not be able to wash or rinse them.

The banquet is on Tuesday, February 26 in the HHS cafeteria. The coaches would like to officially begin the banquet at 6:30, so please plan to arrive before 6:30 in order to drop off your food.

We hope you will all be able to join us along with your son(s) and daughter(s).

7 Medalists, 2 Possible All-State Qualifiers at Div 3 Meet!

Coming into today, only Sydney Snow (#5 seed in the 600) and the boys 4x800 team (8th) were projected to earn medals for top-8 finishes. Well, Snow and the relay team each earned a higher medal than expected, and two more individuals (Madison Ward and Evan Vasilauskas) earned medals, with a few other finishes in the top 12!

***I left the relay split sheet at home, the ones listed were ones I knew off the top of my head. I'll update them tonight.

Boys Hurdles - Logan ran 8.59 in the trials, and Evan ran 8.36 to qualify as the 8th finalist! About 10 minutes after his dash trial, Evan ran the finals and improved his time to 8.31 to earn a medal, despite being seeded 18th!
Boys Dash - Evan ran 6.96 to take 11th place overall, having been seeded 20th.
Boys Mile - Jack ran 4:50, but had an ace up his sleeve for the 4x800.
Girls Mile - Chelsea Dubin had a 2 second PR in 5:42.49, finishing 18th despite being seeded 30th! She's now in the top 10 of all-time Holliston milers, ranked ninth!
Boys 600 - Ryan Moser and Ryan Leonard absolutely demolished their heat, beating the next fastest kid by over 4 seconds as Moser ran 1:28.08 (0.22 PR!) and Leonard ran 1:28.33.
Girls 600 - In the fast heat, there were four seniors, one junior...and our freshman sensation, Sydney Snow. Syd torched the track in 1:40.67 to PR by over a second and earn 4th place! She has an excellent chance to earn one of the 12 wild cards for next Saturday's All-State Meet (I'll explain at the end of the post how the wild cards are chosen).
Girls 1000 - Katie Salley ran 3:25.89, not bad considering she's been sick most of this week. She was right in the thick of the race through 700m. Like Jack, her day was not over...
Girls High Jump - Devin Cuevas cleared 4'10, matching her PR and tying for 14th place! Freshman Madison Ward recovered from an early miss to clear 4'10 on her second attempt...then 5'0 on her first attempt, and justmissed 5'2 when her heel grazed the bar. Thanks to clearing 5'0 so early, she won the tiebreaker and took fifth overall, positioning herself well for a potential All-State berth!
Girls 300 - Nikki Kerrigan took second in her heat, running 44.26 to take 15th!
Boys 4x800 - The boys beat their seed and medaled in 7th place, as Ryan Leonard, Ryan Moser, Matt Simonelli, and Jack Boyd ran 8:45! Leonard led off with a 2:07, the fastest split we've had by 3 full seconds all year!
Girls 4x800 - In a gigantic heat with all the sub-10:00 speedsters, the girls moved up six places to take ninth, just outside the medals. Sydney Snow led off with a 2:28, followed by Kiara Hanlon, Maggie Naughton, and Katie Salley.
Boys 4x400 - Despite missing Cotto and with Leonard in the 4x800, the boys ran 3:50. Good job this season, boys, you were undefeated in duals, an accomplishment that isn't overlooked.
Girls 4x400 - The girls lowered their time by 3 seconds, with Shauna Rockett leading off (63.3), followed by Chelsea Dubin (66.5), newcomer Nikki Kerrigan (64.4), and Virginia Hanstad (65.0) running 4:19.38 to take ninth overall! The girls have the third fastest time ever, and the best since 2008!

Wild cards - so, there are four divisions in track. We're Division 3 (1 is biggest, 4 is smallest, etc.). The top 3 finishers in each division (for each event) automatically make All-States. The next 12 best performances also make the meet. If there's a tie - say, if there's multiple kids at 5'0 like Madison, they take all the kids that are tied with a mark as well.
I'll update the wild card list after each divisional meet.

Three new state qualifiers at TVL Meet!

Great job today, we had three new state qualifiers - including one new double qualifier - as well as many other PR's in the Tri-Valley League championship.

New State Qualifiers
Evan Vasilauskas, 55m Dash (6.94)
Evan Vasilauskas, 55m hurdles (8.50)
Nikki Kerrigan, 300 (43.27)
Kiara Hanlon, 1000 (3:22.15)

Girls Mile - Chelsea Dubin earned one of the top-6 ribbons with a 5:44.95, a new PR, while Maggie Naughton took 10th with a 6-second PR of 5:48.25!

Boys Mile - Jack Boyd PR'd with a great sixth place finish in 4:44.03 (1.5 second PR). Tanner Datz just missed his big goal of 4:59, but took 10th overall in a 4-second PR of 5:00.99!

Girls 600 - Sydney Snow finished a close third in 1:42.25, while fellow freshman Eve Bagley nearly made states with a massive 5 second PR in 1:48.57!

Boys 600 - Ryan Leonard earned another ribbon for the team, finishing fifth in 1:28.72, just a few tenths off his PR. Ryan Moser won the unseeded heat easily in 1:29.30, a PR and seventh overall!

Girls Freshman Mile: Katie DesRochers PR'd by nearly 20 seconds, running a 6:09 to take second. Right behind her in third was Abby Meltzer in 6:13!

Boys Freshman Mile: Kevin Montain's 10 second PR of 5:17 was good for fourth overall!

Girls High Jump - Madison Ward PR'd yet again, breaking her own freshman school record with a jump of 5'0 - on her first attempt, no less! She took fourth, just missing second on tiebreakers. Devin Cuevas was seventh on tiebreakers at 4'6.

Boys High Jump - Nick Bernard tied for 13th at 5'2.

Girls Shot Put - Hannah Brady just missed her PR by 3 inches, throwing 25'10 for 13th. Caitlin Turner took 19th at 23'2.

Boys Shot Put - Max Chisholm was 16th in 33'11.

Girls 55m hurdles - Juliana Van Pelt made the finals and took 8th overall, running 10.26. Diana Waterman finished ninth overall in 10.38.

Boys 55m hurdles - Logan Cotto had our highest finish of the day, taking second in 8.53 seconds. Evan Vasilauskas was fourth in 8.65, but qualified for states with an 8.50 in the preliminary round.

Girls 55m dash - Nikki Kerrigan just missed the finals in 8.00 (9th), while freshmen Casey Rothschild was 13th in 8.17, and Lily Stering was 20th in 8.55.

Boys 55m dash - Evan finished sixth in 7.01, though his trials time of 6.94 qualifies him for states! Unfortunately, there was virtually no rest between the trials and finals. Matt McIsaac was 16th in 7.43, tying his PR, while Isaac Fadden was 18th in 7.58.

Girls 300 - To put this in proper context, Nikki Kerrigan's home PR was 46.5, indicating she probably could break 45. Instead, she hammered a 43.27, easily qualiying for states and just missing second place by 0.10 seconds (behind a girl who's made All-States in the 400 multiple seasons!). Shauna Rockett ran a 46.21 to take ninth overall, winning her heat.

Boys 300 - Jake O'Connell broke the 40-second barrier, finishing 9th in 39.62, several spots above his projected seed! Nate Bubello ran 40.72 to take 15th.

Girls 1000 - Katie Salley held off a furious charge by a Westwood girl to take fourth place in 3:16.22, two full seconds faster than her PR at Coaches' Invite! Right behind her was new state qualifier Kiara Hanlon, who took 9th in 3:22.15!

Boys 1000 - Matt Simonelli PR'd by 7 seconds in 2:51.99, taking 8th place!

Girls 2 Mile - Madison Ward just missed the top-6, taking seventh in 12:41, while Jess Strzempko took 12th in 13:44!

Boys 2 Mile - Mike Glazebrook also finished seventh, running a 10:48.50, while brother Ed Glazebrook ran 11:17.40 to take eighth.

Girls 4x400 - The girls PR'd with a 4:22.18, in order Shauna Rockett (64.1), Chelsea Dubin (66.6), Sydney Snow (64.6), and Virginia Hanstad (66.4)!

Boys 4x400 - Despite not having usual anchor Logan Cotto, the boys stepped up with a 3:42.81 for fourth place, just 0.50 away from second! The splits were Ryan Leonard (54.3), Cole Osten (56.2), Jake O'Connell (56.1), and Ryan Moser (56.0)!

Girls 4x200 - The girls finished second in 1:58.81 beating Westwood by 0.01 - congrats to Devin Cuevas, Lily Stering, Ally Rosati, and Casey Rothschild!

Boys 4x200 - The boys also finished second in 1:41.89, great job by Isaac Fadden, Matt McIsaac, Ben Clapper, and Nate Bubello!

TVL Championship Seeds!

Most of these go to 15th, some events had enough scratches that only 9 or 10 athletes from the league list actually entered.

*** We had one other athlete earn their varsity letter on Wednesday that I forgot to mention. Tanner Datz's win in the mile gave him 9 points for the season. Congrats Tanner!

Ward sets frosh record, 5 new varsity letter winners!

Great job ending the regular season, the boys won 69-17, the girls triumphed 66-18 in our meet vs. Ashland today. We had five atheltes earn their varsity letter (8 points for the season) - Nick Bernard, Max Chisholm, Casey Rothschild, Jess Strzempko, and Caitlin Turner! Also, Madison Ward broke the freshman record in the high jump at 4'11!

I'll start with the boys meet. In the hurdles, Evan Vasilauskas tied his PR with a 6.2, easily winning the race. Ben Clapper took third in 7.3, now ranking in the top 15 in the entire league! Not bad for someone who hadn't hurdled until this month.

Shortly thereafter, in the varsity dash, Evan continued to be a one-man wrecking crew, tying his dash PR with a 5.3 to win easily. Matt McIsaac placed third in 5.7, and we also had PR's in the JV heats from Max Chisholm and Andrew Salant!

Up next was the mile, which was our first sweep of the day! Tanner Datz led the charge in 5:18, followed by Sam Scott (5:25, seasonal best) and Kevin Montain (5:27, PR).

In the 600, Ryan Moser and Cole Osten made great moves midway through the race to pull away and finish 1-2, with Moser tying his PR for this track (1:34.5), and Cole setting a PR as well in 1:35.5!

Usually in a 300, if you can PR by a tenth or two, it's a big deal. Nate Bubello basically took a sledgehammer to his old PR of 42.9. In the top varsity heat, he led at the break and was only passed by Jake O'Connell, with the two crossing the tape in 41.6 (Jake) and 41.8 (Nate). It was an 0.3 second improvement for Jake, and a full 1.1 second PR for Nate! Ben Clapper flew in the unseeded heat, pushing himself to the line in 42.2 to displace Ashland's top runner and complete the sweep.

Back in the 1000, Ashland's top runner - Ryan Milewski, who's got 4:40s mile credentials - was up against Jack Boyd and in his 1000m debut, Ryan Leonard. Milewski took the lead with three laps to go, but a furious kick by Boyd in the last lap left Jack as the winner in 2:51.2 (7 second PR!) and Leonard a close third in 2:52.4. We also had a PR from Matt Ferguson (3:25.8)!

In the 2 mile, the Glazebrooks led from wire to wire, with Mike crossing the tape in 11:12 and Ed finishing in 11:32. Mike was the fastest finisher of the meet, including the Westwood & Bellingham kids.

In field events, Evan Vasilauskas and Nick Bernard were facing a team with two 5'8 guys and one 5'6. Having only done 5'4 (Evan) and 5'6 (Nick) for their own personal bests, they were clear underdogs. However, they stepped up, as Evan won with a PR of 5'6, and Nick cleared 5'4 to take second! Nick's 3 points from the event clinched his varsity letter.

In the shot put, Max Chisholm also clinched his varsity letter, throwing 36'0.5 to take second place.

Finally, our "hybrid" 4x400 team (some usual suspects, some newbies) kept up the undefeated season, beating Ashland in a 3:57.0. Nate Bubello, Isaac Fadden, Jack Boyd, and Cole Osten were the fearsome foursome, with Boyd stealing the show with a blistering 57.5 split for the 3rd leg.

On to the girls meet...

In the hurdles, Juliana Van Pelt tied her PR of 7.5 with her win, and Diana Waterman took second in 8.0. Hana Gross (8.5) and Eve Bagley (8.7) also PRd!

Back in the dash, freshman Casey Rothschild not only clinched her varsity letter, she won the event with a 6.0, possibly the fastest freshman time in the league this year! Lily Stering took third in 6.5 seconds, and we had a PR from Simona Biundo (6.8) in the JV heat.

In the mile, Chelsea Dubin finished first, winning her last race on our indoor track in 5:56, just ahead of Ashland's top runner and our own Maggie Naughton, who ran 5:59. Abby Meltzer ran her best time of the year in 6:11, which is more impressive when you consider her old PR was set at the fast track at the Reggie Lewis Center. Katie DesRochers had an awesome mile debut in 6:24.

In the 600...Eve Bagley and Andrea Labb both had good races, unfortunately the official rang the bell one lap too soon, so their times (which were for 3 1/2 laps, not 4 1/2 since they were stopped early by the officials) don't count. But good efforts by both.

Back in the 300, Nikki Kerrigan (46.8), Shauna Rockett (47.7) and Virginia Hanstad (48.0) ran an impressive sweep, with Rockett tying her home PR and Virginia + Nikki coming within a couple tenths of their own as well. Hannah Freudenberger (50.7) and Katie Carchidi (53.0) also PR'd in the JV heats!

For the 1000, Katie Salley and Kiara Hanlon nearly PR'd on our track despite dropping the rest of the field in short order, running 3:23.6 and 3:28.1 for a 1-2 finish. Sarah Stebbins almost completed the sweep, just one second behind one of Ashland's top distance runners. Jillian McShane PR'd with a 3:44 as well!

In the 2 mile, Jess Strzempko clinched her varsity letter with a 2nd place finish, making her the second freshman to clinch her letter today!

Over in high jump...Sydney Snow tied her PR of 4'8, earning second place as Devin Cuevas also cleared 4'8. Andrea True had also set a PR earlier with a jump of 4'4. But the big story of the event was freshman Madison Ward clearing 4'11, which broke the tie between her and Shawna Rossini for the freshman school record (4'10), leaving Ward the record all by herself. Anyone that saw her attempts at 5'0 knows that the 4'11 might not last long, either.

In shot put, Caitlin Turner clinched her letter with a big PR of 26'11 for second place, with Hannah Brady taking third in 25'3.

And in the 4x400, the girls remained undefeated as the team of Sarah Stebbins, Lily Stering, Ally Rosati, and Casey Rotschild ran 4:57.

Practice is 2:30-4:30 Thursday, 2:30-3:30 Friday, off Saturday. Bus leaves at 1 PM for Reggie on Sunday, meet starts at 3PM (may be 2:45 for freshman mile)
