Before I get to the post, some housecleaning items. The banquet is Wednesday, February 25th at 6:30 in the cafeteria.
1) If you haven't returned your uniform, either bring it to the banquet or meet Coach Kelley after school. I'll be at the weight room from 2-4 each day.
2) Please give $15 to Katie Salley for banquet costs, preferably beforehand. (There might have been a Facebook post about this earlier)
Okay, on to today's events. Long season, often it's a tricky meet to hold a peak. But we had some impressive performances.
Sydney Snow made quick work of the unseeded section of the 1000, running 3:00.34 to take eighth place overall. She's our first All-State Medalist since 2009 (Emmaline Berg and Rosie Keogh)! and it was her second fastest time ever. She's the first junior to medal since Berg in 2008.
Madison Ward just barely missed on all three of her 5'0 attempts, including a second attempt that nearly everyone thought she had until the back of her heel clipped the bar. As I mentioned earlier this week, she joins Sydney, Shawna Rossini, Berg, and Kim Thalmann as individuals who have qualified for multiple All-State Meets.
Despite a sore throat, Mike Glazebrook broke 10 minutes yet again. His time of 9:59.88 was 18th overall. 12 months ago, he didn't even quailfy for the class meet in the 2-mile, running 10:39. This year, he was in the fast heat at All-States!
The 4x400 saved the best for last. Emma Guccione had the race of her life in the opening leg, taking the lead at the cut-in and never looking back in 62.5. Eve duplicated the split, then Madison ran 65 as the pack began to jockey with each other. Sydney Snow took the baton and had a PR split of 60.3 as the girls finished third in their heat. But more news was to come. They beat the entire third section, and finished 14th overall (Top half of the field!) in 4:10.83, a full THREE seconds ahead of the old school record!
Spring sports registration is already available online, practices start Monday, March 16th. Please take care of uniform/banquet fee (covers pizza, decorations, etc)!

Snow, Glazebrook, Girls 4x4 Move on to All-States in big day!
The snow started earlier than expected when we got back, but the real storm was brewing on the track at the Reggie Lewis Center!
A truly historic day, I'll go in order.
Eve Bagley had a full second PR to take 10th in the 600 in 1:42.07, a loaded field that only had one scratch in the top 12. Next up was the 1000, Katie Salley was 12th in 3:16.40, Alexis Mejia 17th in 3:28.41. Sydney Snow had to deal with some heavy traffic the first 400, but ran 3:03.21 to take second place!
Sydney now joins a truly elite group of athletes who have qualified for All-States in multiple years as an individual.
Emmaline Berg (2008+2009 Shot Put), Rosie Keogh (2008+09 2 Mile), Shawn Rossini (2001 High Jump, 2002/03 Hurdles/High Jump), Kim Thalmann (1997 2 Mile, 1998 Mile). That's Dartmouth, Wesleyan, Cornell, Brown, by the way...
The 300 was the Superstar Sophomore Show, as Rick Brown vaulted from 13th seed to 6th overall in a PR of 37.23. Everyone ahead of him is either a junior or senior, and he even beat the other sophomore from Medfield that had defeated him earlier in the season. The last two sophomore boys to medal for Holliston were Cam Chisholm (shot put 2010) and Jeff Mansfield (Hurdles 2000). Emma Guccione just missed her PR, but avenged an early season loss to Norton star Brooke-Lynn Williams among others as she also took sixth in 43.94! She's the first underclassmen to score in a girls sprint event since 2003 (Chrissy Sereno, aka the school record holder)
Madison Ward medaled yet again in the high jump, clearing 5'0 and taking seventh place to provide two more valuable points.
Back on the oval, Mike Glazebrook held on as the leaders torched the first 800 in 2:20, leaving him in dead last of his section at 2:23. Undeterred, he worked his way up and ran a 9:53.41 for fifth place. After not even qualifying for the class meet last year, he's a lock to make All-States now as a wild card (they take 10, he's #4 right now with a time that's well ahead of the Div. 5 field), and only 4.8 seconds off the oldest school record for the boys team! (Bob Steinbrecher, 9:48.4 in 1981).He's the first distance guy to quailfy for us since at least 1993.
There was one more event left. Despite all four girls doubling, the quartet of Emma Guccione, Eve Bagley, Madison Ward, and Sydney Snow ran 4:13.82, taking third place, breaking their school record by 0.32 seconds, and qualifying for All-States! It's the first relay team to qualify in 10 years (girls 4x8 in 2005).
The girls finished ninth with 19 points, their highest team finish since 2009, and only their third top-10 finish in the last 11 years! The boys were 19th with 7 points, their best in three years.
Division 5 goes on Tuesday (pushed back from Sunday due to the storm), as of now here are the rankings for the All-State kids. I'd expect maybe 1-3 teams or individuals to push them down from Div. 5, but not more than that. So these should be close to their seeds for All-States. (30 entries total for each event, by the way)
Sydney Snow - 11th best 1000
Mike Glazebrook - 15th best 2 mile
4x400 - 17th best time
Great job all around, today was the first time in 13 years that we qualified at least one boy, one girl, and a relay.

State Div. 4 Meet Schedule/Note
Parents, please be aware that the MIAA has notified teams that parking is more limited than usual near the Reggie Lewis Center. They recommend taking public transportation (Orange Line). I'd imagine most would avoid the train given the issues with the MBTA of late, so if you are planning on driving in, leave earlier than usual. Carpooling could be a good idea, most of our athletes are competing in the same time frame. The meet is shorter than most since the standards were increased this year.

Spring Meeting / Other notes
The Spring Track & Field Information Meeting will be tomorrow (Thursday) at 2:15 in the cafeteria. Plenty of surprises in store....
Practice for those competing in states will be at 2:45. Registration for spring sports is already available online, please take care of it sooner rather than later! Remember, your physical is only good for 13 months and can expire during the season. So check to see if you need to schedule a new one.
If you still have your uniform, best option is to drop it off to me after school, or give it to someone still competing so they can turn it in to me.
The banquet is Wednesday, February 25th at 6:30 in the cafeteria.
Sunday, February 8, 2015
Congrats to Coach Moreau
Congratulations to Coach Moreau on the birth of her daughter Peyton. Many of you had asked and I'm happy to report they're both doing well!
Also, with no school there is obviously no practice tomorrow. Don't run outside, use treadmills or bikes if you have them inside,

Glazebrook, Ward, Girls 4x4 win at TVLs
At
the Tri-Valley League Championship, Madison Ward, Mike Glazebrook, and the
girls 4x400 all won their events, and Sydney Snow broke her own school record
in the 600. The girls finished third with 50 points, the boys seventh with 14.
Emma
Guccione came in to the meet having just missed the state qualifying standard
by 0.01 seconds (7.85). After taking care of that with a 7.82 in the preliminary
round, she torched a 7.77 to finish third despite being seeded seventh! Jana
Paecht was 19th in 8.54.
Over
at the boys dash, Ed Bennie PR’d in 7.21 for 12th and Sam Ratcliffe
was 18th in 7.43.
In
the girls hurdles, Eve Bagley was 12th in 10.55 and Bridget Ghelli
nearly made the finals with a huge PR of 10.20 to take ninth.
Addie
Datz was 15th in the mile in 6:07.47.Eve Bagley took fifth in the
600 in 1:43.86, and Sydney Snow came up with a PR and school record of 1:38.39
taking a close second.
The
first Coed Freshman Mile thanks to the small guys field saw Tim Strang (5:26, 2nd
for guys) and Emma Sayers (5:53.11, second for girls) both PR. Kelly Irons was
fourth in 5:56 and change somehow her result was off the official sheet.
Back
at sprints, the boys duo of Rick Brown (37.43) and Ed Bennie (39.09) both PR’d
to take fourth and 13th. Anna Foster (14th, 47.43) and
Helen Dolan (11th, 46.41) followed in their heats of the girls.
Madison Ward PR’d in 45.82 to take seventh place, then Emma Guccione set
another PR and finished fourth in 43.52, just missing third by 0.01.
Katie
Salley and Sydney Snow were next in the 1000, with Syd doubling back from the
600 to take third in 3:10.21, and Katie claiming fifth in a seasonal best of
3:14.21.
To
say Mike Glazebrook has a rivalry with Michael Brady of Medway is an
understatement. Here were their three races this month.
Dual
Meet – Brady 4:50.7, Glazebrook 4:50.7 (Brady wins by less than a tenth)
Dual
Meet Rematch – Brady 4:46.5, Glazebrook 4:48
Elite
Meet 2 Mile – Glazebrook 9:55.64, Brady 9:55.70
Three
races separated by less than a tenth of second twice – that’s a margin of
victory normally found in the 55 meter dash. Well, they stayed true to form
today. Mike shadowed Brady for 15 of the 16 laps, hanging 37s and 38s, before
ripping off a 30 second final 200 to take the win in 10:01.76 – less than a
second ahead of Brady. Ed Glazebrook, battling an illness from this past week,
took ninth in 11:05. Adri Grinder and Abby Meltzer finished seventh (13:07) and
14th (13:45) in the girls two mile. Over in “The Cage”< Hannah Brady
was ninth in shot put (27’3), Ashley Arnold 19th (23’5.5). Mark
Mulvaney took 16th (34’7), Ben Salley 22nd (30’7).
Madison
Ward answered the question, “Who’s the top high jumper now that the Westwood
girls have graduated?” With a parade of 4’10 and 4’11 seeds threatening to
assert themselves, Ward cruised through the first two heights at 4’8 and 4’10
with only the Norton girl emerging unscathed. When Ward cleared 4’11 on her
first attempt, and the rest of the field missed out, the victory was hers. For
good measure, she got over 5’0 on her own afterward. Caroline Ward tied for 10th
at 4’4.
The
girls 4x400 team had some workhorses, as Helen Dolan was in her second event
and Emma Guccione, Eve Bagley, and Sydney Snow were all in their third. After splits by Emma (63.6), Eve
(64.0), Helen (65.6), Sydney anchored with a 60.9 to keep Hopkinton away and
secure the victory in 4:14.52!
