Obviously we're not having the banquet the same day as the Division 3 East meet, when a new date has been confirmed I'll post an update here.

6 Winners, Two Records in historic TVL Championship Meet

Congratulations to both the boys and girls teams for yesterday's strong showing at the Tri-Valley League Meet. The boys were fifth with 48.5 points, their best total since 2012 as well as more than 2013 and 2014 combined! The girls were third but with 80 points had their highest total since the 1990s!
Earlier addition failed to include the girls LJ and TJ, somehow coolrunning didn't include them.
We had SIX event winners, including Kylie Lorenzen leading the way with two individual wins and anchoring another..while breaking one of her many school records. Eve Bagley also broke a long-awaited school record.
I'll start with girls, track, then field.
Jill Davis (14.67) and Kelsey Crowley (14.97) both dealt with the early winds to nearly set electronic-timed PR's in the 100. Elena Daly had a huge race to take 12th in the 200 in 29.25, a PR faster than any hand-timed 200 she's run. Cassandra Kelly was 18th in 30.03.
Kylie was in a fight at the 200m mark, but a massive surge along the far turn gave her the 400 win going away, running 60.41. Helen Dolan nearly scored out of an unseeded heat, finishing 7th in 65.16.
Sydney Snow led a trio of 800 runners with a third place finish in 2:25.77. Alexis Mejia was 10th in 2:37.67, and McKinley Vrees had a 4-second PR in 2:44.04 to take 15th!
Keelie Verbeek PR'd in a 6:04 for runner-up in the girls freshman mile. In the varsity mile, Kelly Irons was 13th in 5:59.74, Adri Grinder 18th in 6:24.53.
Katie Salley, in probably the deepest sub-12 minute field we've seen in the 2-mile, took fourth in 11:54.83, while Addie Datz claimed 8th in 12:34.64.
Bridget Ghelli took eighth in the 100 hurdles despite having to run her heat of the finals twice, with a best time of 17.48, a converted PR when you factor in the electronic difference.
Eve Bagley, despite a strong early headwind on the backstretch, took second in the 400 hurdles (68.67), breaking Steph Paolillo's school record by 0.03! Anna Foster was 12th in 76.43.
The girls 4x100 relay team wasn't seeded in the top six, but the team of Keara Shaughnessy, Caroline Ward, Simona Biundo, and Helen Dolan placed fifth in 54.74.
The girls 4x400 relay team pulled away late, as Eve, Alexis, Syd, and Kylie ran 4:11.45!

Kelly Alves was seeded third in the shot put, but won by two inches with a best of 32'5.25! Danielle Lamb was 14th at 25'3.5! Danielle was also ninth in the discus at 76'8, Sophia Rahim 16th at 60'7. Kelly came back for a ninth in the javelin (90'2), and Amelia Porter took 15th with a PR of 75'3

Kylie Lorenzen trailed Ashland's jumper early on, but not only took first place in the finals, she bested her own school record with a jump of 17'7.5, beating some of the boys' marks! Elena Daly also had a PR in hers (still checking for the distance)
Madison Ward continued her season-long dominance of high jump, clearing 5'0 to add an outdoor title to go with the indoor championship.  Both Madison (a close second) and Caroline (fifth) medaled in the triple jump, as we continued our jumps domination.
The boys were only expected to score 33 points based on the performance list, and to be in a fight among fifth-seventh. Sam Campbell was 10th in the 100 in 12.23 (Converted PR!), Roy Mitri 18th in 12.71.
Ed Bennie took 12th in the 200 (25.13). The 400 served as notice for the future, Ryan Sofoul was the top freshman in 56.52, ninth place overall, while Rick Brown was the top underclassmen at second overall in 53.43, just edging out third by 0.01!

Kevin Ricard took 18th in the 800 (2:27.86), and Mike Glazebrook used a huge late move to vault from fifth to third in the mile for a PR of 4:39.80, breaking the long-awaited sub-4:40 barrier! Ed Glazebrook had a seasonal best in the 2 mile, taking seventh in 10:50.25. Tim Strang nearly won the freshman mile, setting a new PR with a second-place time of 5:17.14.

The boys 4x100 relay team was seeded fifth but the squad of Sam Ratcliffe, Liam Hebert, Tucker Ciarcello, and Matt McIsaac finished fourth in 47.25. The 4x400 relay team also was fourth in 3:45.18, composed of Rick, Ryan, Mike, and Ed.

Over in field, Mark Mulvaney was 10th in shot put (37'6.5), while Jake Hancock leapfrogged half the field in discus to take fourth at a PR of 110'1. Chris Zuraski was 18th at 72'9. Matt Wolfson was 11th in javelin (114'4), while Reuben Jacobson was 17th (105'6).

Cam Dudley tied for eighth in high jump at 5'2, while Sam Campbell was 11th at 5'0. Mike Donovan rallied in the triple jump, taking first place with a finals jump of 40'9! Finishing close behind in fifth was Matt McIsaac at 38'2.

The long jump was a Holliston Underclassmen Parade, as Donovan nearly pulled off a double win with a second-place showing of 19'10.75 - (new PR!), Liam Hebert was fifth at 19'1, and Tucker Ciarcello was tied for sixth at 18'9.5.

Girls 6th at Relays...SMR to Nationals, 2 more records, 2 more qualifiers!

Long, confusing day at Burlington with track/field events coming and going, but well worth it.

We had two new relays qualify for states, three school records, four top-five finishes, and one NATIONALS QUALIFIER, And – unofficially – the girls had by far their best team finish ever!

The boys started off in the field events, with the long jump relay of Liam Hebert, Mike Donovan, and Tucker Ciarcello placing 16th with a combined mark of 53’9. Liam led the way with a 19’6 jump, joining Mike and Tucker in the 19-foot Club and as a contender for the TVL Meet on Wednesday. The boys javelin crew of Matt Wolfson, Reuben Jacobson, and Cam Waddell placed 14th at 329’0.

The girls track events started off with a school record. In the theme of the day, an expression I stole from Coach Blackmore is “You can’t pick what year you graduate high school.” In other words, you can’t control how deep your event is (or isn’t) in a given year. The girls 4x1600 team was ninth in a time of 23:25 (Salley 5:29, Mejia 6:00, Irons 6:00, Datz 5:56), but their time unofficially broke the old school record of 23:40!

The girls 4x100 team came in on a quest to get the 54.24 standard for states, and just barely missed, as Keara Shaughnessy, Caroline Ward, Elena Daly, and Helen Dolan ran 54.73 to take 24th.

Next up was the Sprint Medley. To use the “can’t pick your year” quote, everyone seemed to ‘stack” this event. So although the girls took fifth…BUT in a time that would’ve been top two in almost any year….AND their splits (2:21.4 Sydney Snow, 27.5 Madison Ward, 28.0 Eve Bagley, 58.6 Kylie Lorenzen) added up to 4:16.65….which qualified for New Balance Outdoor Nationals. It also ranks as 39th in the United States of America. Do yourself a favor…check athletic.net, and look up the US rankings for ANY event. Find 39th place, and prepare to be stunned how incredible it is to be ranked that high in anything.

And before the “but” crowd chimes in…..It IS contested regularly in other states.

The girls 4x200 team entered with a 2:03 PR from their Near-Midnight Run At Twilight. Undaunted, the quartet of Anna Foster (28.9), Kelsey Crowley (30.1), Jill Davis (30.3), and Elena Daly (28.9) blazed a 1:58.04 to take 14th, beating half the field!

The girls 4x400 was the last running event. Kylie, Eve, and Sydney were doubling back…and in fact, Kylie and Sydney had already started their jumps events. The girls had been knocking on the door of the school record (4:09) the last few years.

This year, they got a running start and kicked the door down.
Eve led off in 61.7, Lexi followed with a 63.3. Sydney got the baton in fifth and worked up to 4th with a 60.5. Then came Kylie, with a huge move the last 150m to pass third and second, and nearly stole the win with a split of 58.7. Their time of 4:04.25 SHATTERS the old school record, and is the third fastest time in Massachusetts so far. A few other teams will probably match or exceed that in the other relay meets, but expect them to be in the top 10 after this weekend.

The boys had two running events on the track, and made the most of it. The 4x100 relay team had come oh-so-close to qualifying in several dual meets, but the team of Sam Ratcliffe, Liam Hebert, Mike Donovan, and Matt McIsaac finally punched their ticket to states, running 46.73 to beat the standard by 0.11!

Following suit, the boys 4x400 relay team was coming off a Westwood meet three days earlier when they had run 3:43, two seconds off the standard. Rick Brown led off with the race of his life in a 51.9, then Mike Glazebrook ran a 56.4 (proving that 2 milers can have speed!), and Ryan Sofoul followed up with a 56.1. Ed Bennie held off a charging foe to win the heat, splitting 53.2 as the boys easily qualified by four seconds with a 3:37.80, eighth place overall! It’s the third fastest time in the TVL this year.

Over in field, the girls throws had a trio of top-20 finishes. The shot put squad of Kelly Alves (32’8 PR), Danielle Lamb (28’0 PR), and Flannery Langton (21’0) took 11th at 81’6.5, while the discus team of Lamb, Melanie Galeaz, and Maria Gentile was 16th at a combined distance of 201’8. Javelin (Alves, Amelia Porter, Langton) finished 17th at 203’7 (no individual results available as of yet for those last two).

In jumps, the long jump crew of Kylie (16’8 unofficial), Alexis (near-15 feet), and Elena (14’+) just missed medaling with a 46’0.75. The high jump squad of Madison (4’11), Caroline (4’9) and Sydney (4’6) took fourth at 14’2, while the triple jump of Madison, Caroline, and Kami Kozubal finished third at 97’5.25.

At the end of the day, the girls scored 20 points to place sixth overall. Previously, their highest finish ever was 14th (not counting 2008 data, unavailable…checking on that)!

Congrats to all that either made history, extended their season by qualifying for states, or who competed well and set new personal bests. Everyone gets to charge up the hill again on Wednesday over at the League Meet, so if you didn’t have your best day today, you’ve got another shot!

Division 3 Relays Schedule

Here is the schedule for the Division 3 State Relays at Burlington High School on Saturday. It’s a different format from most meets. In the morning, the girls compete in the running events while the boys compete in field. They switch around noon, although field events depend on how soon the first group finishes. For example, girls long jump may end at 11:30, but girls discus might not end until 12. So if you’re in a later field event, you need to keep an eye on the one that precedes you, particularly if you’re in the first flight.

If you are competing only in the afternoon, you or your parents can drive you in, but your parents have to e-mail me ahead of time. Also, anyone competing in the afternoon has to be present by 10:45 (girls field) or 11 (boys running). Takes about 45 minutes to get to Burlington.

7:30 Be at Holliston HS. Locker rooms will be open. Please note – since it’s a relay meet, anyone in a running relay has to have the same (solid) color if they wear any visible undergarments (like spandex).

Madison sets school record, Lamb/Bennie make states in strong meet vs Hopkinton!

Although we didn’t pull off the upset, we got the “Rocky I” ending. By that I mean when the 4x400 runners were lined up the Hopkinton coach and I had to consider having them wait because the meet hadn’t been decided yet, as we were still awaiting a couple field event results to trickle in. So we made them “go the distance.”

Great job by the girls, as they lost 77-59 in a meet that at one point was only 58-55 Hopkinton. Some very strong performances despite the hot conditions, and we made them bring their A game to beat us. Boys lost 90-45 but also had a few new PR’s.

We had a new state qualifier apiece on the girls and guys side that I’ll get to in a minute, but we had a new SCHOOL RECORD in the girls triple jump. On her final attempt, Madison Ward cleared 36’1 to best Marissa Bynoe’s old mark by four inches!

Eve Bagley came within half a second of Steph Paolillo’s school record in the 400 hurdles, winning in 68.9. Kylie Lorenzen tied her own school record in the 100 with a 12.6 in the 100 meters. Sydney Snow began half of an impressive double by taking second in the mile in 5:36, losing only to the league leader.

The 4x100 lost (also to the league leader), but the team of Keara Shaughnessy, Caroline Ward, Cassandra Kelly, and Helen Dolan lowered our best time by over two full seconds to 54.5, just 0.5 away from states!

Kylie came back to win the 400 in a season-best of 59.1, which I think is tops in the TVL now. She had also just come back from long jump where she won at 16’2. 15 points in the span of about 45 minutes! Alexis Mejia just missed scoring third place but also PR’d at 62.9!

In other early field events, Kelly Alves and Danielle Lamb went 1-3 in the shot put (30’6, and a PR for Danielle at 27’6). Madison Ward won at 5’2 in high jump, the third meet she’s cleared that height.

Back on the track, Bridget Ghelli proved she’s there to stay near the top of the TVL leaderboard, running 17.5 a week after qualifying for states. She’s #4 in the league.

Sydney doubled back and ran a new PR of 2:21.5, just missing the school record in a blazing fast time for second place!

Madison’s track part of the day went well as she PR’d by 0.1 in the 200 to take third in 28.0.

Katie Salley ran 12:16.4 to easily take the girls 2 mile, at which point we pulled back within the aforementioned 58-55 score.

In the final field events, Madison (36’1, school record) and Caroline (33’3, second place) took 1-2 in the triple jump. Over in discus, Danielle Lamb qualified for states with a big 7 foot PR in discus at 87’2! Sophia Rahim placed third at 68’8. In javelin, Kelly Alves was a close third in 88’9.

The boys rallied after an early deficit, as Mike Glazebrook led the way with a win in the mile in 4:55 and Rick Brown took the 400 in a PR of 52.5, besting some of the league’s top runners.

Satchel Snow PR’d in 21.4 in the 110 hurdles to take second place AND clinch a varsity letter. Not too shabby for the freshman! Shortly after, Mike Glazebrook dropped a 62 second last lap to win the 800 in 2:10.0, also a PR.

Ed Bennie didn’t place against a stacked 200 field, but DID qualify for states with a 23.7 (23.9 was the hand-time standard!)!

Ed Glazebrook was second in the 2-mile, nearly besting his top mark of the season (11:05) despite the heat.

The boys 4x400 won uncontested but also lowered their PR by four seconds to 3:48.2, the quartet consisting of Rick, Ed Bennie, Tucker Ciarcello, and Ryan Sofoul.

Over in field, Mike Donovan won the long jump (18’10) and triple jump (39’ and change), while Matt McIsaac was third in triple. Mark Mulvaney PR’d with a 37’0.75 in the shot put for third place, and Cam Dudley PR’d at 5’6 to take second in the high jump, moving into the top six for the TVL!

Matt Wolfson had a seasonal best in javelin at 134’, moving within 9 feet of states with his second place throw.

Bridget Ghelli qualifies for states in sweep of Ashland

Congratulations to both teams that got decisive wins on Senior Day over Ashland. The boys avenged a rare loss from indoors to the Clockers with a 110-26 victory, while the girls defeated our neighbors 91-45.

*********The Hopkinton meet will start at 4:15 on Thursday due to AP Testing. They run their meets very efficiently, so we should be returning by 6:30. Bus will leave at 3PM so we're not sitting around all day. If you are taking an AP test you can drive over on your own after your exam, but need to let me know ahead of time.

M Ward to Nationals, SEVEN Medalists and 11 PR's at Twilight!

To say we made a good impression on our long-awaited return to the Twilight Meet would be an understatement. The most competitive invitational in the state, it’s usually dominated by the largest of the large schools. But we had medals in SEVEN events, and two more top-10 finishes to go with 11 seasonal PR’s, including 7 lifetimes PR’s!
While we had no new state qualifiers, we did have a new NATIONALS qualifier! Madison Ward had made the 5’3 standard before in a dual meet, but to qualify you have to achieve your mark in an invitational meet. Now, originally the high jump was supposed to do “odd” heights (4’11, 5’1, 5’3)…undeterred when she found out they were doing evens, she made every height on her first attempt through 5’2. After barely missing her first attempt at 5’4, she soared over the bar and landed in the mat with a ticket to North Carolina in June for New Balance Outdoor Nationals! She had a couple good attempts at 5’6, perhaps 5’5 (which would tie former All-State champ and Cornell alum Shawna Rossini’s school record) is in her near future…

Caroline Ward, having raced back from high jump, cleared 34’2.5 in the second-to-last flight of the triple jump for a new PR. However, it was good enough to make the finals (top 8)…not content with merely making the finals, she PR’d by nearly another foot at 34’11.25 to take a medal for fifth overall!
On the track, we had a trio of milers set new lifetime PR’s. In the first girls’ heat, Emma Sayers and Kelly Irons let a ridiculously aggressive pack burn themselves out as they worked their way through the field for new PR’s of 5:52.74 (Emma) and 5:53.14 (Kelly)! Mike Glazebrook popped a 4:40.21 in his mile for a new PR, and closed in 66 seconds as he powered his way through his heat.
Bridget Ghelli (18.21) had a goal of making this meet at the beginning of the year for the 100 hurdles, and managed to beat nearly half the field in her event. Ed Bennie ran 24.81 in the 200 for a near-PR.
Kylie Lorenzen, in only her second 400 of the season, ran a 60.46 to finish fourth, her first (but not only) medal of the day…
Sydney Snow was in her first Invitational Meet mile, and was in a seeded heat that had five sub-5:10 girls including a sub-5 winner. Despite having the 11th best PR entering the meet, she nearly stole a medal with a seventh place time of 5:16.30! She now has the second-fastest outdoor mile in school history, having just leapfrogged Cheryl Mrozienski (1979) with only former Brown University All-American Kim Thalmann ahead of her on the leaderboard.

The second set of jumpers also dominated the pit. Cass Kelly displaced some of the girls in the first flight, then Madison Ward popped a 15’7 despite not having done the event in 11 months. Kylie Lorenzen leapt 16’6.5 to take third place, her second medal of the day! Over in triple Matt McIsaac nearly qualified for states, jumping 38’5. Mike Donovan was the last guy of 12 to be seeded in the final flight, but after popping a 42’5 (11 inch PR!) he finished third overall! He’s the runaway leader in the TVL, and is ranked quite high in D3 and the State as a whole.

Jake Hancock came close to his PR, launching 96’5 in the discus, and Kelly Alves nearly snuck into the finals of shot put from the second-best flight, tossing a 31’6 (nearly matching her seasonal best) to take ninth overall, along with an 83’ in the javelin.
The meet was actually fairly close to schedule early on, but after a lengthy delay in setting up the hurdle prelims and a LONG delay for bringing in an extra set of portable lights, the last events (400 hurdles, 2  mile and 4x200) started over an hour later than listed. The 400 hurdlers didn’t mind, as Anna nearly PR’d with a 76.04, and Eve vaulted from the #12 seed to fourth place overall with a 69.50, a new PR and just one second off Steph Paolillo’s school record!
Katie Salley toed the line for the 2 mile at 10:00, and despite being in a field with not one, but TWO girls that ran sub-11, held on to run a new PR of 11:47, besting her old mark by six seconds! An 81-second last lap (she averaged about 87 to give you an idea of how impressive a kick that is) nearly catapulted her to the top of the TVL leaderboard, as she’s only three seconds out of first!
The Girls 4x200 had the toughest hand psychologically. Seeded last, and running MUCH later than expected, they not only beat an Austin Prep team that was seeded at 1:55, they beat them by nearly half a straightaway to take fifth place and earn a medal! Congrats to Keara Shaughnessy, Kelsey Crowley, Jill Davis, and Elena Daly!

Finally, a hearty thank-you to all the parents that came to cheer – particularly those that were waiting longer than expected to see their son or daughter compete - and a big thank-you to our teammates who weren’t competing but came to give us quite the cheering section! Also special thanks to McKinley for taking such terrific pictures!
