Although we didn’t pull off the upset, we got the “Rocky I” ending. By that I mean when the 4x400 runners were lined up the Hopkinton coach and I had to consider having them wait because the meet hadn’t been decided yet, as we were still awaiting a couple field event results to trickle in. So we made them “go the distance.”
Great job by the girls, as they lost 77-59 in a meet that at one point was only 58-55 Hopkinton. Some very strong performances despite the hot conditions, and we made them bring their A game to beat us. Boys lost 90-45 but also had a few new PR’s.
We had a new state qualifier apiece on the girls and guys side that I’ll get to in a minute, but we had a new SCHOOL RECORD in the girls triple jump. On her final attempt, Madison Ward cleared 36’1 to best Marissa Bynoe’s old mark by four inches!
Eve Bagley came within half a second of Steph Paolillo’s school record in the 400 hurdles, winning in 68.9. Kylie Lorenzen tied her own school record in the 100 with a 12.6 in the 100 meters. Sydney Snow began half of an impressive double by taking second in the mile in 5:36, losing only to the league leader.
The 4x100 lost (also to the league leader), but the team of Keara Shaughnessy, Caroline Ward, Cassandra Kelly, and Helen Dolan lowered our best time by over two full seconds to 54.5, just 0.5 away from states!
Kylie came back to win the 400 in a season-best of 59.1, which I think is tops in the TVL now. She had also just come back from long jump where she won at 16’2. 15 points in the span of about 45 minutes! Alexis Mejia just missed scoring third place but also PR’d at 62.9!
In other early field events, Kelly Alves and Danielle Lamb went 1-3 in the shot put (30’6, and a PR for Danielle at 27’6). Madison Ward won at 5’2 in high jump, the third meet she’s cleared that height.
Back on the track, Bridget Ghelli proved she’s there to stay near the top of the TVL leaderboard, running 17.5 a week after qualifying for states. She’s #4 in the league.
Sydney doubled back and ran a new PR of 2:21.5, just missing the school record in a blazing fast time for second place!
Madison’s track part of the day went well as she PR’d by 0.1 in the 200 to take third in 28.0.
Katie Salley ran 12:16.4 to easily take the girls 2 mile, at which point we pulled back within the aforementioned 58-55 score.
In the final field events, Madison (36’1, school record) and Caroline (33’3, second place) took 1-2 in the triple jump. Over in discus, Danielle Lamb qualified for states with a big 7 foot PR in discus at 87’2! Sophia Rahim placed third at 68’8. In javelin, Kelly Alves was a close third in 88’9.
The boys rallied after an early deficit, as Mike Glazebrook led the way with a win in the mile in 4:55 and Rick Brown took the 400 in a PR of 52.5, besting some of the league’s top runners.
Satchel Snow PR’d in 21.4 in the 110 hurdles to take second place AND clinch a varsity letter. Not too shabby for the freshman! Shortly after, Mike Glazebrook dropped a 62 second last lap to win the 800 in 2:10.0, also a PR.
Ed Bennie didn’t place against a stacked 200 field, but DID qualify for states with a 23.7 (23.9 was the hand-time standard!)!
Ed Glazebrook was second in the 2-mile, nearly besting his top mark of the season (11:05) despite the heat.
The boys 4x400 won uncontested but also lowered their PR by four seconds to 3:48.2, the quartet consisting of Rick, Ed Bennie, Tucker Ciarcello, and Ryan Sofoul.
Over in field, Mike Donovan won the long jump (18’10) and triple jump (39’ and change), while Matt McIsaac was third in triple. Mark Mulvaney PR’d with a 37’0.75 in the shot put for third place, and Cam Dudley PR’d at 5’6 to take second in the high jump, moving into the top six for the TVL!
Matt Wolfson had a seasonal best in javelin at 134’, moving within 9 feet of states with his second place throw.
