At a windy Pembroke High School, we had two automatic qualifiers for next week's All-State Championships, led by Division 3 East Champion Kylie Lorenzen (400) and D3 East Runner-Up Ryan Snow (Triple Jump). The girls finished 15th with 17.33 points, the boys came in 21st with 11 points. I'll recap in the order the events were contested.
Madison Ward staretd her busy day with the triple jump, earning her first medal of the day with a jump of 34'5. Over on the track, Abby Meltzer ran 12:31.23 for 30th in the Girls 2 Mile. Up next was Mike Glazebrook, who PR'd by four seconds to take 11th in 10:07.34, thanks in part to a scorching last lap of 67.1!
The 400 hurdlers were next, and both nearly medaled. Eve Bagley was ninth in 70.62, while Ryan Leonard took 11th in 61.37. Continuing our busy morning, Katie Salley was 25th in the mile (5:38.36).
Kelly Alves was the top freshman in the shot put, nearly making the finals with a throw of 32'1.25. She's ahead of where former All-American Emmaline Berg threw her freshman year, so the future is certainly bright. Madison picked up yet another medal, finishing eighth in high jump (4'11).
Back on the track, after Logan Cotto advanced to the 110 hurdle finals, Kylie Lorenzen lined up for just her second 400 of the year. Taking the lead by 150m, she pulled away with a win by nearly a full second, winning in 58.76!
Sydney Snow was up next, and she won her heat of the 800 in 2:24.07, as well as earned a medal for eighth place overall.
Right near the finish, the boys triple jump was hosting the biggest surprises of the day. Mike Donovan was the 29th seed of 30 entries, yet finished ninth with a big PR of 40'3.5, making the finals. Only one other underclassmen beat him. But he wasn't the only surprise in the finals - Ryan Snow came in as the ninth seed with his recent PR at TVL's (41'1.5), but a TWO FOOT PR of 43'2.75 gave him second place, earning a trip to All-States!
Logan matched his seed from the prelims, earning sixth in the 110 hurdles at 16.29. The boys 4x100 was 19th overall, as the quartet of Sam Ratcliffe, Liam Hebert, Donovan, and Ed Bennie ran 47.42. Finally, the girls 4x400 of Snow, Bagley, Helen Dolan, and Lorenzen finished fifth in 4:16.75.
Two of the class meets (Div. 1 and Div. 2 East) go tomorrow, I'll post the Girls 400 and Boys Triple Jump seeds tomorrow night once those meets are finished.
If you finished competing today, you can turn your jersey in to me after school on Monday.

Lorenzen wins 400 at Last Chance Meet!
Although she had run a scorching anchor leg at Relays, Kylie Lorenzen still had yet to run an open 400 this year. So while she still needed to qualify for states (can't use relay splits), she also wanted to make sure she got into the fast heat. To say she accomplished her goal would be an understatement. Ripping through the first 200 in 27-mid, already with nearly a second lead, she ran 58.86 to win by over a second, and just miss the meet record by 0.17. It's the #2 time in Division 3 East, setting herself as a favorite for All-States and potential class champion.
Performance list for EMass goes up Wednesday.

TVL Recap
The official results were finally posted last night, so here's the extended recap of the Tri-Valley League Meet. The girls finished fourth with 61.5 points, the boys sixth with 23.
The first event was the Freshman Mile, and though it wasn't scored, it was a heck of a race by Addie Datz, who finished second in 5:54.25.
Up next was the 400 hurdles, with Anna Foster claiming 10th in 75.98, and Eve Bagley ran a time of 69.52 to take second place, still within a second of the school record. Ryan Leonard ran 60.62 to take fourth for the boys.
The 200 was next, and Virginia Hanstad was 18th in 29.40, and Kylie Lorenzen finished third in a seasonal best of 26.61! Ed Bennie was 24.45 in 13th place.
Katie Salley came up with six more points for the girls with a third-place showing in the mile with a 5:37, trailing only two of the best milers in the entire state.
In the 100, Sam Ratcliffe was 14th (12.48), Elena Daly took 17th (14.50), and Kylie Lorenzen earned another top-six ribbon with a sixth place showing of 13.24.
The first field events started to finish up. Madison Ward nearly won the high jump, as she finished third on the misses tiebreaker at 5'2, nearly clearing 5'4 on her last attempt. The surprise of the day, so far happened in long jump. After Elena Daly (15th, 13'8.5) and Alexis Mejia (12th, 14'1.75), Sydney Snow came in as the 12th seed, not even high enough to be in the top flight. But she not only made the finals, but claimed third place with a jump of 15'7, nearly qualifying for states and setting a PR of almost a foot!
Rachel Kriegsman was 15th in the discus (62'9), and Sophia Rahim had a huge PR to take 10th at 67'2.
Ryan Snow PR'd by over a foot to take fourth in the triple jump (41'1.5), while Mike Donovan made states at 39'0.25 and Logan Cotto jumped 39'0, taking 10th and 11th respectively.
Reuben Jacobsen (33'6.25) and Matt Wolfson (35'10), were 12th and ninth in the shot put, as Reuben had one of his best throws in competition this year.
Matt had a monster PR in javelin, by over 10 feet as he threw 130'4 for eighth place. Tanner also PR'd at 119'4 (14th), while Reuben was 21st (103'9).
Back on the track, Hana Gross was 19th (21.27) and Bridget Ghelli (18.30) finished 13th. Logan Cotto served notice by destroying the field in the trials with a 15.50 (third fastest in EMass Div. 3), then won easily in the finals in 15.70 to become the TVL CHAMPION!
Both 4x100 teams earned ribbons by finishing sixth. The girls team of Ally Rosati, Izzy Getchell, Kelsey Crowley, and Madison Savas ran 56.32, while the boys team of Ratcliffe, Liam Hebert, Donovan, and Bennie ran 47.51.
Alexis Mejia finished eighth in the 800 (2:33.61), and Sydney Snow had another PR by finishing third in 2:24.65. Tanner Datz was 18th in 2:19.75.
We nearly had two medalists in the girls 400, as Madison Ward went from the 12th seed to 7th place in 65.40, and Helen Dolan took sixth in 64.36. Ryan Snow and Rick Brown finished seventh (54.31) and eighth (54.50), a big PR for Rick.
Abby Meltzer nearly medaled in the 2-mile, taking seventh in 12:38. Ed Glazebrook was ninth (10:54), and Mike Glazebrook claimed fifth (10:24).
Back at field events, Madison took second in triple jump (33'6), while Kelly Alves was the only freshman to medal in shot put (sixth, 30'3.5), and had a big PR of 87'1 to take eighth in jav. Rachel was 19th (65'8). For the boys, Liam was 13th in long jump (17'5.5), while Logan took eighth (18'5.5). Ryan Leonard was 20th in discus (85'4), Sam Gillman 23rd (69'3).
Last but not least was the 4x400. The boys team of Leonard, Brown, Datz, and Snow finished fifth in 3:45.23, almost matching their seasonal best. The girls closed things out with a flourish. Eve Bagley opened the race, handing off to Helen Dolan in a pack of three fighting for the lead. Helen accelerated so quickly at the 200m mark that she stunned officials and rival coaches, opening up a 1-second lead on Hopkinton as she handed off to Anna Foster. Anna did a great job maintaining the lead, and Sydney Snow found herself battling the same anchor that Hopkinton had race her in Indoor TVLs. Fortunately the result was the same. Despite two different attempts by the Hiller to pass her, Sydney held the lead and the girls became TVL CHAMPIONS in 4:16.40!q

Girls 4x4, 4x8 Medal at Relays
At our "home away from home" in Pembroke - site of the Eastern Mass Division 3 Meet on May 31st - we had some solid performances at the Division 3 Relays.
The boys 4x100 got things started, running 47.44 to take 22nd in their field, a decent time considering they can still improve some of the handoffs.
The girls 4x800 had run 10:19.83 at the Coaches Invite, and the quartet of Madison Ward, Katie Salley, Alexis Mejia, and Sydney Snow lowered their time by 4 seconds today and earned a medal by finishing in sixth in 10:15.98! Not bad considering all twenty teams ran together.
The girls 4x400 closed out the day, and despite being in the second-fastest section, finished fifth overall in 4:11.27, which I believe is the second fastest time in school history behind the record time of 4:09. Eve Bagley, Helen Dolan, Anna Foster, and Kylie Lorenzen now have the fastest time by a TVL team this year, too.
If your season is over and you still have not turned in your uniform, either find Coach Moreau during the day or Coach Kelley after school. Banquet is June 12th (it's on the "Schedule" part of the blog)
Students will be dismissed at 1:30 for the TVL Meet on Wednesday.

Despite temperatures that climbed to the mid-80s, there were many impressive performances today. The boys lost both meets, but had double-winner Matt Wolfson (shot put/javelin), to go with new state qualifier Ryan Snow (53.0 in 400), and league-leading 110 hurdler Logan Cotto's PR of 15.7.

Lots of PR's at Coaches Invitational
Although the boys official results were up over an hour ago, my patience for refreshing the ma.milesplit.com webpage every 15 minutes for the girls' results to go up has worn out. Since I know the approximate times/distances for the girls, I didn't want the loyal readers to go to bed without reading about the spectacular day we had!
(Only event I didn't get an estimated finish was Kelly in the shot put, I'll update that, along with official times/distances for the other events, once they're posted).
Our boys were down in New Bedford, and the girls were in Somerville, but I'll go in order of events as if they were in the same spot.
At a meet like this, the depth of competition can be intimidating, as the top of the leaderboard is usually dominated by the Division 1 and Division 2 schools. From the official results I saw at the boys meet, most of them finished 10th-25th overall but only were behind one or two people in our Eastern Mass Division, which I'm sure held true for any girls we had that finished in similar positions.
So a meet like this is all about positioning. Using the elite competition to help pull you along to a PR. Maybe you went from a "state quailfying" time/distance to a "potential medalist" level. Even if you didn't PR, getting awfully close to your best mark eliminates that little voice in your head that says "no, that was a fluke." (That little voice is always wrong!)
Our first performer of the day epitomized what this meet was about. Eve Bagley entered the 400 hurdles at 72.03 seconds for a PR, only one of a few of our athletes in attendance who was still trying to make states. After breaking 70 seconds, she not only qualified, but set herself up as a serious contender for a top-8 medal at Eastern Mass, and I believe she's only the second girl in the TVL under 70 seconds. Oh, did I mention that she's only a second behind Steph Paolillo's school record?
Ryan Leonard was on track early to make a run at his newly acheived PR of 58.8 from eariler this week. Although he stumbled a bit on the last few hurdles, he still finished 11th overall in 60.04, and his PR from Bellingham looks to be among the top four in our Eastern Mass Division. He took the last medal (8th place) as a junior, perhaps as a senior he'll grab the last All-State bid?
Up next were the 2-milers. Abby Meltzer didnt' quite PR, but her time of 12:26 was her 2nd-best ever, and was well ahead of some of her more recent dual meet races. Distance events can be tricky, especially the 2-mile, where the length makes the variance in race times quite large. In other words, she can now call herself a "consistent low 12" 2-miler.
Mike Glazebrook had won all four of his dual meet races this year, and only one of them - his comeback win against Mike Brady of Medway - was he seriously challenged. So finding himself in a large pack early was a bit disorienting. He went out in 5:02, and although the lead pack of four he was chasing pulled away in laps 6 and 7, he still set a 7-second PR of 10:11.41, good for 15th overall - he was seeded 23rd - and fast enough to beat six guys in the seeded section. He's setting himself up for a legitimate chance at the hallowed sub-10 mark.
Kylie Lorenzen had only just returned to racing and jumping three days ago. She cleared 4'9 in high jump, a technical event that often takes a while to get reacquainted, but followed up with an impressive seasonal best of 26.71 in the 200 trials.
Addie Datz entered the freshman mile having knocked on the "sub-6 minute" door a few times, running 6:06 earlier in the season and just missing with a 6:01 against Bellingham. Well, she didn't open the door, she kicked it down by nearly skipping the 5:50s entirely with a time of 5:51, winning her section with what I'm told was quite the kick. Her new PR is closer to the state qualifier (5:42) than her old PR!
Katie Salley had set an outdoor PR against Bellingham, running 5:34.8, but had missed her overall PR from TVL Indoor by just a few tenths of a second. Undaunted, she popped a 5:31, nearly breaking the sub-5:30 mark!
Although I didn't hear Kelly Alves' official result, I heard she threw at least 31', which would be her second-best throw of the year. Although she's so consistent we take her ability to throw over 30' for granted, please everyone realize that a freshman routinely tossing state-worthy throws is not typical. Quite a day for her!
In the 110 hurdles, Logan Cotto had entered with a 16.1 hand-time from this year, but in such a short event times like that are always questionable. His time of 16.46 today was a full two-tenths better than he's ever run electronically, bettering his mark from last year's state meet. He's certainly moving closer to 16 seconds.
In the 400, Helen Dolan lowered her state-qualifying time by over a half-second, running 63.07 to further move up the leaderboard in the TVL! Over at the boys meet, Ryan Snow ran 53.85, which is technically a PR since his 53.7 was handtimed (converts to 53.94, you add 0.24 seconds), in a similarly excellent race!
Sydney Snow had just PR'd in the 800 running against the #1 girl in the state. Up against the same #1 girl (as well as most likely the #2, #3, and who knows how many others in the top 10), she PR'd for the second time in four days, running 2:25! She's knocking on the door of "low 2:20s", which usually puts you in quite a competitive spot for All-State qualification.
With temperatures now in the low 80s, the girls 4x800 team of Katie Salley, Madison Ward, Alexis Mejia, and Sydney Snow took 10th in a very competitive field, running 10:19.83. I'll have to check the archives to see how that stacks up as a potential outdoor relay record, but nonetheless it was easily a state-qualifying time and puts them in the discussion for medals at EMass.
The events on the track were done, but with seemingly every high school girl in Massachusetts entered in the triple jump, Madison Ward was still waiting for her flight, the last of seven. She cleared 34'9.5, which just missed the finals but is also her 2nd-best jump of the year, missing her PR by just three inches. However, even her 34'9.5 today is still better than anyone in EMass Div. 3, according to athletic.net. So she's proven herself to be a consistent 34-35 foot jumper, and a leading contender for states.
A good day by all, remembering to look at the results in context of the big championship meets ahead (TVL, EMass Div 3) a lot of people moved themselves in to new categories, from qualifiers to contenders, or came close enough to their best marks to give them confidence that when the big days arrive, they'll be ready.
Don't forget to be at the track by 2:45 to set up for our tri-meet with Medfield and Norton on Monday.
